The Shotover Bath House

An 18 m salt pool, two hot tubs on the north terrace, a steam room and four treatment rooms. Open 7am to 9pm, seven days.

What is down there

The bath house takes the lower ground floor and opens onto the north terrace. It is included in every room rate. Visitors from outside the hotel pay NZ$52 a day and numbers in the building are capped at forty so the pool stays usable.

The pool is 18 m by 6 m, salt rather than chlorine, heated to 29°C, with two lanes roped off between 7am and 9am for anyone swimming lengths. The two hot tubs on the terrace hold six between them and sit at 38°C year round. The steam room runs at 45°C and takes eight people.

Towels, robes and slippers are in the changing rooms. Lockers take a four-digit code rather than a key. Children under sixteen use the pool between 9am and 6pm with an adult, and the hot tubs are 16 and over at all times.

Treatments Four rooms, six treatments, one price list
Alpine recovery massage NZ$146 55 minutes. Deep work on legs and shoulders, written for people who have been on a mountain since eight in the morning.
Relaxation massage NZ$128 55 minutes, or NZ$96 for 30 minutes on back and neck only.
Hot stone NZ$168 75 minutes. Two therapists are qualified for this one, so it needs a day’s notice in winter.
Facial NZ$134 50 minutes, with products made in Wanaka and a short consultation first.
Two together NZ$284 55 minutes each in the double room, which is the one at the end with the window.
Half day, two treatments NZ$262 Any two 55-minute treatments with an hour between them, and lunch sent down from Cecil & Walter.

Treatments run 9am to 8pm. Book at reception, by phone on +64 3 409 0612, or with your room enquiry. Cancellations inside four hours are charged at half. Arriving late shortens the treatment rather than the one after it.

Booking a treatment

Four therapists work here and the diary is kept at reception rather than online. In July and August the evening slots go first, usually a week ahead; in May and September you can normally have an hour’s notice. Ask when you book the room and the slot is held with it.

Tell us about pregnancy, recent surgery, a heart condition or a skin condition when you book, not on the table. Some treatments change and one or two are declined, and it is better to know that in advance.

What to bring, and what not to

Nothing. Robes, towels, slippers, shampoo and a hairdryer are in the changing rooms, and swimwear can be bought at reception for NZ$45 if yours is somewhere between here and the airport. Phones stay in the lockers: it is the one rule the staff enforce without discussion, because half the room is in swimwear.

The quiet hours are 7am to 9am and after 7pm. Groups of four or more are asked to take the far end of the pool at those times.
